How to Deal With Long Blog Entries
Imagine this: you were nice enough (or forced to) comment on somebody’s blog. As you enter somebody’s website, you are disturbed by…I mean greeted with the following: small/illegible text, paragraph after paragraph of a monotonous, boring life, and/or abrupt topic switchers between paragraphs. What’s a commenter to do? First off, don’t panic! Don’t cry, laugh, or wince at the pain either. Read this list, for it shall be your first-aid kit!
1. If the entry is illegible on said website, CTRL+A,C, and V that sucker into Notepad. Be sure to turn word-wrap on! Ahh, legibility. Isn’t that better? Now onto reading…(or skimming)
2. If you notice that the blog is a “topic-switcher” (more than one topic in an entry), find the longest paragraph. If they all look about the same length, find a random one and read that. Type a short and sweet comment about said paragraph, and you’re done! Not dealing with a topic-switcher? Move onto step three please.
3. So the blog you see rants about the same thing thirty times. If there is a main theme involving a problem (depression, financial problems, etc.) wish them the best of luck. Add advice, if it doesn’t seem obvious to the blogger. In tough times, everyone needs encouragement. Do your good deed by adding the encouraging comment, and be along your merry way. Is the blog entry not emo enough? Step four, por favor.
4. Apparently this blog isn’t about something depressing! If it has an overall happy theme (wedding, promotion, etc.) give the appropriate compliment. If there are any details or pics that interest you, comment on it! This leads me to the next step…
5. Pictures/videos/other forms of media are a must at commenting! I mean, the blogger did put them in for a reason. Check out what they have in their blog (pictures, videos, song clips, links, etc.) and comment on that. Can’t be bothered to watch, listen, or visit? Don’t have that light-speed internet connection? Say the following: “This seems pretty interesting, but I’ll check it out later!”
6. If all else fails, find important keywords. Nouns and verbs, baby! Try your best to skim it through. Read through the entry like Google searches. Find something you feel is best you should comment on, and add it. Be sure to use your commenting common sense!
Still hurting from the enormous wall of text? Don’t comment at all. This is obvious, but for those of you who still feel obligated to do so (especially through comment exchange systems), don’t waste your time. Even if you are obligated, don’t bother with the entry if you’re just too lazy or if the blogger doesn’t seem interesting/willing enough to care for the visitor when writing. Either that, or write on the next/previous entries. This is just the last option. Surely the hits and comments you get will be worth the time.
