Commenting Etiquette
Commenting is a fun thing to do, because the commenter can give feedback and reactions while the blogger can read something from another person’s point of view. However, I’ve seen some stupid comments on blog entries that should have never been typed, let alone published. When commenting a blog entry, keep these simple rules in mind.
1. Stay on topic. If you want to compliment or criticize a person’s website, use a contact form, guestbook, or tagboard. Bloggers will appreciate the feedback anyways, but prefer it to stay away from their own entries. It shows courtesy and respect for the blogger who took the time to write.
2. When returning a comment, DO NOT talk about your entry they commented on. It’s left in the past. Let it be. You will only make yourself look like a self-centered fool that didn’t give a damn to read the entry, which might not have been that long in the first place. If you really have to respond to it, mention it in a contact form, or reply back on your own website.
3. Do not give out your life story. I have to admit, bloggers love receiving long comments. It shows that the reader has been paying attention and has something worthwhile to say. However, if your comment is longer than the entry itself, shorten it. Many blog entries leave no choice but to comment from your own perspective/experience, and that is fine. But their blog is about them, not you.
4. Do not advertise. Referring to #2, it will also make you seem like a self-centered, visit desperate fool. “Nice site, visit mine!” or “Comment me back plz!” are comments that are not acceptable at all. In every commenting system, there is an option where you leave your URL. Use that, and the blog reader or other visitors will decide for themselves whether or not they want to visit. Advertise like no tomorrow, and your comment will be deleted, flamed, or published without a URL.
5. Be literate and type properly. This one is obvious. Many blogs not on Piczo or some other crappy free host require this. We are not on MySpace, so refrain from tYPin lYk dIs 2 mak3 urself l00k STOOP1D. Spelling and grammar check is your best friend.
In the end, I admit that some entries are so long and boring, you can’t be bothered to comment the thing. I hear your pain Despair/Exentrique users. Be sure to read the commenting policy, as well as these rules. Also proofread and revise a few times! I’ve had a hard time keeping up too, but commenting well in any entry can gain you a good reputation, which will help you and your site in return.
